Lesson Plan

The tricky “hinges” of the spine. We will be focusing on the CervicoThoracic hinge and its direct relationship with headaches, cervical discs and radicular issues in the Upper Limb. To master many different neck and upper extremity patient symptoms, the hinges require special attention due to their importance in tensegrity, fluid dynamics and far reaching effects. The C.T. Hinge (or junction!) is a great example of the cervical and thoracic spine interdependence. This relationship is complex and is usually NOT discussed with Dynamic Stability and Mobility. Dynamic stability and mobility depend upon the following factors:

A. Segmental structural components… the individual joints, capsules, discs and fascia! We will focus on this one!
B. The overall posture and curves.
C. Segmental mobility which leads to global or “functional ability”.
D. Strength and activation.

Learning Objectives

1. Review relational anatomy, with a focus on cervical to trunk and thoracic components.
2. Relate the CT hinge and its major dysfunctions
3. Recognize how to improve the fluid mobility and tendon/ligamentous part of the puzzle.
4. Discuss the tricky C7/T1 and some pearls.
5. Identify exercise and specific movements to decompress and CHANGE the CT hinge.
